The United States is perceived as the muscle-flexing 'Big Brother,' feared and hated in most of the 'non-western' world, particularly so in the Middle East and Central Asia. In contrast, the Canadian nation-state is widely perceived as the compassionate middle power, with a commitment to peacekeeping rooted in its distinct national values. Canada's participation in the war on terror helps sanitize the image of the US power.

Racism involves a double movement of aggression and narcissism; the insult to the accused is doubled by a compliment to the accuser. Racist thinking is tautological and circular; we are powerful because we are right, and we are right because we are powerful. It is also essesentializing, ahistorical, and metaphysical, projecting difference across historical time: 'They are all that way, and they will always be that way.'
