As many as 36 police were injured and more than 1,400 vehicles torched in clashes around France overnight Sunday and early Monday, as the violence appears to be spreading to other European countries.
The violence has spread across France, with overnight attacks reported in 274 towns.
Since the violence started, more than 4,700 vehicles have been burned, dozens of businesses and schools have been attacked and more than 800 people have been arrested.
Many people view the violence as the expression of pent-up anger by the country's unemployed and underemployed youth, particularly in Muslim immigrant communities, and as a sign of the difficulty North Africans have experienced in trying to integrate into French society.
