tyresiasOne night she had a dream that two continents, personified by women, were arguing over her. Asia maintained that since Europa had been born in Asia she belonged to it. The other continent, which was nameless, said that her birth was not important because Zeus would give it to her. Disturbed by the dream Europa woke up and could not return to sleep.
She had friends over and they went off gathering flowers by the sea to ease her mind. Zeus noticed this charming group, particularly Europa, who was the prettiest of the maidens. Some say Eros induced him with one of his darts but Zeus often managed with self motivation.
Zeus appeared to the group as a white bull more beautiful then any other that lowed musically. He was so obviously gentle that all the maidens rushed to stroke and pet him. The bull lay down at Europa’s feet and she put flowers around his neck. She sat on its back and instantly the bull plunged into the sea, rapidly swimming away from the shore. They were soon joined by Nereids riding dolphins, Triton blowing his horn and even Poseidon. She understood that the bull must have been a god. She pleaded with him to pity her but Zeus explained his love. He took her to Create, where he was raised, and once there Zeus returned to man-like form and made love with Europa under a cypress tree. She became the 1st queen of Crete and had three sons by Zeus, one of which was Minos. In remembrance of his love of Europa, Zeus placed the shape of the great white bull in the sky as the constellation Taurus.
Hera was distracted during her affair with Zeus and never punished her for it.
